EM Physician/Pharmacist Team Published in American Journal of Case Reports

UK Toxicology Director Dr. Peter Akpunonu, along with residents Dr. Blake Davidson, Dr. Matt Riley, and EM Pharmacist Regan Baum, recently submitted a case report to the American Journal of Case Reports that is In Press as of November 3, 2021. In this report, they discuss the case of a pediatric patient that reported to the ED after ingesting delta-8 THC gummies. Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC) is an isomer of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9 THC), the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in the marijuana plant. The clinical presentation of delta-8 THC exposure is similar to known effects of delta-9 THC exposure. This patient, a 2 year old female, was minimally responsive upon arrival and required intubation for encephalopathy. A urine drug screen performed in the hospital was positive for delta-9 THC. Laboratory confirmation of delta-8 THC exposure is not routinely available with common testing modalities, but with the collaboration of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Toxicology Testing Program, it was determined that the patient actually ingested delta-8 THC rather than delta-9. The similar clinical presentations between the two may negatively impact the clinicians’ abilities to determine the specific substance ingested. Read the entire report here:
