Away Rotation Scholarship Opportunity

Dr. Adkins has brought an EM scholarship opportunity to our attention. It’s for minorities applying to EM who want to do an away rotation at UCSF. The scholarship would pay for a 4th year medical student’s away rotation costs in EM at UCSF. Definitely something to look into. All the info should be below.

Invitation to Mid-Atlantic MedWAR

Just wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to have some fun and represent UK EMIG at the Mid-Atlantic MedWAR on March 30th! MedWAR (Medical Wilderness Adventure Race) combines wilderness medicine with adventure racing to create unique events designed to teach and test wilderness survival and medical skills. Teams of 3 will navigate by map and compass to checkpoints where they will encounter physical challenges or wilderness medicine scenarios. The team must successfully complete the task and demonstrate all procedures before moving forward in the race. Past races have involved treating everything from climbing or diving accidents to stove burns and altitude sickness. Expected race finish times are 4-7 hours. The event is open to anyone 18 years or older regardless of medical knowledge or experience. Medical training is NOT required to compete, however you will have a significant advantage if you and your teammates have some level of wilderness medical knowledge. Participants receive an event t-shirt, goody bag and post-race meal. The race is in Newport News, VA (9 hour drive from UK). The EMIG will try to coordinate carpooling, so let us know if you sign up. If there’s enough interest we might even coordinate some awesome UK EMIG MedWAR team shirts!

Castlefest 2013 Ultrasound Festival Pre-View

Hi EMIGers,

If you don’t know what Castlefest is… you should! It’s a five ultrasound learning extravaganza!! Instructors from as far as Australia fly into Lexington to teach bedside ultrasound to conference attendees. Emergency Medicine Ultrasound program directors from across the country will be present. It takes place at “The Castle” April 26-30th and is put together by Dr. Dawson (and a couple of his friends). Medical students get free admission to attend any day they volunteer to be an ultrasound model!! This a fabulous learning opportunity for medical students. More details will follow on how to sign up.
